The candles
How do I light the candle the first time?
The first time you burn your candle, wait at least 3–4 hours, or until the wax pool melts to the edge of the glass. Once the top is completely melted, you can put it out. This helps prevent tunnelling and gives you the full burn time.
What size are the candles, and how long do they last?
Our candles come in 13 oz glass jars with a gold metal lid and give you up to 70 hours of burn time. Burn times are estimates under normal conditions.
What makes Smoke Out Candles different?
Our candles are made with an enzyme formula that helps neutralize smoke and everyday odours, so smells can fade instead of being covered by perfume. They're a blend of paraffin and soy wax with a zinc wick. Results vary with the type and strength of the odour, the room and ventilation. They're home-fragrance products, not air purifiers or medical devices.
Will one candle remove every smell?
Not always. Our candles are made to help neutralize smoke and everyday odours, and they're home-fragrance products, not air purifiers, cleaning products or medical devices. For smoke or cooking smells, light the candle in the room where the smell is and let it burn while you're there.
How many scents are there?
20 scents, from Fresh Linen and Lavender & Chamomile to Birthday Cake, Mango Passion and Classic Cologne. Browse all the candle scents.
Burn tips & safety
What are your candle burn tips?
- Trim the wick to 1/8″ (about 3 mm) before every burn.
- If a black “mushroom” appears on the wick, put the candle out, let it cool, trim and relight. Mushrooming can make the candle smoke.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or anything combustible, and keep the wick centred.
- Keep the candle in a spot free from drafts to help reduce dripping and smoking.
- If the flame seems too high, put the candle out, trim the wick and relight.
- Burn until the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar to minimize wax left on the sides. Some wax on the sides is normal; the amount varies by colour, fragrance and burning environment.
- [[CONFIRM max burn time per session on the jar label, e.g. “Don’t burn for more than 4 hours at a time”]]
How do I burn my candle safely?
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it within sight at all times and out of reach of children and pets.
- Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, curtains, anything flammable and other heat sources. Never place it directly on furniture.
- Don't let the flame touch the side of the glass. The jar gets hot, so handle it carefully.
- Glass is fragile. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when handling the lid, and don't use a jar that is cracked, chipped or scratched.
- Stop burning when ½″ (about 1 cm) of wax remains. Don't refill jars with wax.
- Put the flame out carefully (wax may splatter) or use a snuffer, and replace the lid once it's cool.
Can I use incense or car fresheners safely?
Burn incense in a proper holder on a heat-resistant surface, with ventilation. Hang car fresheners where they don't block your view or touch hot surfaces, and don't light them. [[CONFIRM against packaging warnings]]
Orders & shipping
Where do you ship, and how much does it cost?
We ship across Canada only (no international, no local pickup). Shipping is a $20 flat fee to Canadian provinces — there is no free-shipping threshold. For the territories (YT, NT, NU), we calculate shipping after we receive your order. Orders are processed within 48 hours. Details are on our Shipping Policy page, and you'll see the provincial rate at checkout before you pay.
Do you accept returns?
Retail sales are final. We don't offer a general return window for change of mind. The only exception is a product received damaged in transit: email us within 7 days of receiving it with picture proof, and we'll handle it. See the Returns & Refund Policy.
What if my candle arrives damaged?
Candles come in glass jars, so we pack them carefully. If something arrives damaged, email getthesmokeout@gmail.com within 7 days of receiving it with your order number and picture proof (photos of the item and the packaging). Retail sales are otherwise final. See the Returns & Refund Policy.
How can I pay?
Secure card payments at checkout (Stripe or Square). All prices are in Canadian dollars and don't include tax; tax is calculated at checkout.
Are the car fresheners candles?
No. Our Car Candle products are flame-free hanging car air fresheners shaped like our jar — not wax candles. Don't light them. They're a secondary add-on for the ride: formulated to help with odours too, but they do not work as well as our jar candle.
Do you offer 10% off the first order?
Yes. New subscribers can get 10% off their first order. Subscribe via email or the site popup and Woo Coupon Box sends a unique first-order code. One per customer / first order unless the offer says otherwise.
